Sri Lokanatha Goswami was a personal associate of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and a great devotee of the Lord.
Early Life
Sri Lokanatha Goswami was a resident of the village of Talakhadi in the district of Yashohara, also known as Jessore, in Bengal. Previously, he lived in Kanchanapada. His father’s name was Padmanabha, and he had one younger brother named Pragalbha.
Journey to Vrindavana
Following the instructions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Lokanatha Goswami went to Vrindavana and made the sacred land his home. There, he dedicated himself to devotional service and established the Gokulananda temple.
His life in Vrindavana reflected his deep attachment to the Lord and his desire to serve without seeking personal recognition.
Spiritual Master of Narottama Dasa Thakura
One of the most significant aspects of Sri Lokanatha Goswami’s life was his relationship with Srila Narottama Dasa Thakura.
Narottama Dasa Thakura chose Sri Lokanatha Goswami as his spiritual master. Narottama Dasa Thakura became his only disciple, establishing a deeply significant spiritual relationship remembered within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition.
An Example of Profound Humility
Sri Lokanatha Goswami was known for his extraordinary humility. He did not desire personal recognition or fame. It is said that he did not want his name mentioned in the Chaitanya-charitamrita. Consequently, his name does not appear frequently in this celebrated work.
This quality reveals the spirit with which he lived his life—not seeking recognition for himself, but dedicating himself entirely to devotional service.
His Birthplace and Legacy
The village of Talakhadi, associated with Sri Lokanatha Goswami, is located in the historic Yashohara region, now connected with present-day Bangladesh. According to traditional accounts, descendants of his younger brother continued to reside in the village.
The legacy of Sri Lokanatha Goswami lives on through his devotion, his service in Vrindavana, and his relationship with his only disciple, Srila Narottama Dasa Thakura.
