Sri Gauridasa Pandita was one of the intimate associates of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda. His life was filled with pure devotion, loving service, and unwavering dedication to the Lord.
According to Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā (Verse 128), Sri Gauridasa Pandita is the eternal associate Subala, one of the dear cowherd friends of Sri Krishna and Balarama in Vrindavana.
Early Life
Sri Gauridasa Pandita initially lived in the village of Saligrama, located near present-day Mudagacha. He was the younger brother of Suryadasa Sarakhela. With his elder brother’s permission, he later moved to the banks of the sacred Ganges and settled in Ambika Kalana.
He was greatly respected and was patronized by King Krishnadasa, the son of Harihoda.
Residence at Ambika Kalana
Ambika Kalana became the center of Sri Gauridasa Pandita’s devotional service. The town is situated across the Ganges from Santipura.
A beautiful temple still stands there today. In front of the temple is a large tamarind tree where, according to tradition, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Gauridasa Pandita met and shared loving devotional exchanges.
Another treasured relic preserved at this temple is a handwritten copy of the Bhagavad-gita, believed to have been written by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself.
Family Legacy
Sri Gauridasa Pandita established a family devoted to devotional service. His eldest son was Bada Balarama Dasa, while his youngest son was Raghunatha.
Raghunatha’s sons, Mahesha Pandita and Govinda, continued the family’s devotional tradition. His daughter was Annapurna, and many generations of descendants carried forward his spiritual legacy.
