The Principal Among the Lord’s Confidential Associates

Sri Svarupa Damodara Goswami was the principal figure among Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s confidential devotees. The records of his diary have revealed the confidential purposes and inner mission of the Lord.

From Purusottama Bhattacharya to Svarupa Damodara

Before Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu accepted the renounced order of life, Purusottama Bhattacharya, a resident of Navadvipa, desired to enter the renounced order. He left home and traveled to Benares, where he accepted the position of brahmacharya from a Mayavadi sannyasi. Upon accepting brahmacharya, he received the name Sri Damodara Svarupa.

Soon afterward, without accepting sannyasa, he left Benares and came to Nilachala, Jagannatha Puri, where Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was residing.

The Lord’s Secretary and Constant Companion

After meeting Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Jagannatha Puri, Sri Svarupa Damodara dedicated his life to the Lord’s service. He became the Lord’s secretary and constant companion.

He enhanced the Lord’s pleasure by singing appropriate devotional songs, which were greatly appreciated by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri Svarupa Damodara perfectly understood the confidential mission of the Lord, and by his mercy, the devotees came to understand the true purpose of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s appearance.

His Eternal Identity

Sri Svarupa Damodara has been identified as Lalita Devi, the second expansion of Srimati Radharani. However, text 160 of Kavi Karnapura’s Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika identifies him as the same Visakha Devi who eternally serves the Lord in Goloka Vrindavana.

Therefore, Sri Svarupa Damodara is understood to be a direct expansion of Srimati Radharani, assisting the Lord in experiencing the mood of Srimati Radharani.
