Mohandas Pai: Spare 2% of your wealth to wipe out hunger…

CNBC-TV18 hosted a talk show on 5th October with Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa, Vice Chairman of Akshaya Patra Foundation and Sri Mohandas Pai, one of the trustees on the Foundation’s Board and also the Chairman of Manipal Global Education Services. The show was aired by the channel in support of Daan Utsav celebration.

During the talk, Sri Mohandas Pai said that issues of people’s health and children’s education in India can be solved if all billionaires come together and spend at least 2% of their wealth every year in public-private partnerships as Akshaya Patra has done.

Daan Utsav is India’s “festival of giving” celebrated from October 2 to 8, every year. This week-long celebration was launched in 2009 with a view to bringing all Indians together through the act of giving. This can be anything like a small donation to a charity, providing basic necessities for the needy, donating meals to hungry children or spending a couple of hours volunteering for a cause. One can contribute a small portion of one’s time, money or any resource to the society and experience the joy of giving.

During the week, special events are organized by social groups, individuals, schools, colleges, corporates, NGOs and others to provide an opportunity for all to participate in the festival. CNBC-TV18 is celebrating Daan Utsav by hosting conversations with philanthropists and the causes that they support.

Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO implementing the world’s largest midday meal program for children studying in government schools. At present, it provides wholesome midday meals for over 1.4 million children from 10,845 schools across 10 states in India in partnership with Government of India, respective State Governments, corporates and philanthropists.

Sri Mohandas Pai inspired the founding of Akshaya Patra and has been one of its ardent supporters. During the CNBC-TV18 show, he spoke of his long association with the organization right from the days of its inception in the year 2000. He made a personal contribution every year and worked with Sri Madhu Pandit Dasa, the Chairman of the Foundation to make it the largest midday meal program in the world. He said that Akshaya Patra is being run much better than any corporate organization with its full-fledged team and high-quality supply chain management using operational and food safety techniques.

Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa, replying to a question, explained the way Akshaya Patra expanded into a large-scale program from a small beginning over a period of time with good governance and dedicated efforts. He mentioned Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) as the inspiration behind this initiative who instructed about feeding people from ISKCON temples. He said that Akshaya Patra has helped in increasing the attendance of children to the class and improving their performance in the studies. He also mentioned that food safety, operational costs and raising funds were the major challenges faced while running Akshaya Patra.
