Sri Sanatana Goswami was one of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan and one of the foremost disciples of Sri Chaitanya<\/a> Mahaprabhu. A great scholar, spiritual teacher and deeply humble devotee, he played an important role in establishing the teachings of Lord Chaitanya and revealing the spiritual significance of Vrindavan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before dedicating his life completely to Krishna, Sanatana Goswami held an influential position in the government of Bengal. Yet neither position nor material prosperity attracted his heart. His deep interest in spiritual life eventually led him to leave everything behind and dedicate himself completely to the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His journey from a powerful government minister to a renounced devotee living simply in Vrindavan is an extraordinary example of surrender, humility and dedication to the service of Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early Life and Government Service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami and his younger brothers, Rupa Goswami and Anupama, belonged to a respected family. Sanatana and Rupa were highly educated and became important officials under the Muslim government of Bengal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of their association with the government, they received the title \u201cMullik,\u201d a title given to wealthy and respectable people who had close connections with the administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Sanatana Goswami occupied an important position, his real interest was spiritual life. He was deeply learned in the scriptures and studied Vedic literature under his spiritual master, Vidyavachaspati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As his attraction to Krishna consciousness grew stronger, his interest in government affairs gradually diminished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing Srimad Bhagavatam Over Political Power<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, Sanatana Goswami stopped attending to his government duties and remained at home studying Srimad Bhagavatam with learned brahmanas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Nawab learned about this, he personally visited Sanatana and asked him to accompany him on an expedition to Orissa. Sanatana refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nawab became angry and ordered that Sanatana Goswami be imprisoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But imprisonment could not change Sanatana\u2019s determination. His heart was fixed on leaving government service and reaching Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before leaving home, Rupa Goswami had kept some money with a local grocer for Sanatana\u2019s use. Sanatana used this money to secure his release from prison and began his difficult journey toward Varanasi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey to Meet Lord Chaitanya<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami travelled with his servant Ishana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During their journey, they stayed at an inn. The innkeeper discovered that Ishana was secretly carrying gold coins and began treating them with unusual hospitality while planning to take their wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana sensed that something was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he questioned Ishana, the servant admitted that he had brought money with him. Sanatana immediately gave the money to the innkeeper and requested his assistance in safely crossing the dangerous terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, Sanatana met his brother-in-law Srikantha, who requested him to stay with him. Sanatana declined, but Srikantha gave him a valuable blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These incidents reflected a transformation taking place in Sanatana\u2019s life. The man who had once occupied an influential government position was gradually leaving behind his dependence on material possessions and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His destination was now clear: the lotus feet of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Varanasi<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After a difficult journey, Sanatana Goswami finally reached Varanasi, where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was staying at the house of Chandrashekhara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former government minister now appeared like a poor traveller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana approached Lord Chaitanya with remarkable humility. Despite his scholarship, social position and accomplishments, he did not present himself as a learned or important person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This humility became one of the defining characteristics of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srila Prabhupada explains that although Sanatana Goswami belonged to a highly respectable family, he was exceptional for his humility and meekness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Months of Instructions from Lord Chaitanya<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu personally instructed Sanatana Goswami extensively in the science of devotional service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Chaitanya remained in Varanasi for approximately two months while teaching him the principles of bhakti and many profound spiritual truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These instructions were not meant only for Sanatana\u2019s personal spiritual advancement. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was preparing him for a much greater responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami was to become one of the principal teachers who would systematically establish and preserve the teachings of Lord Chaitanya for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mission Given to Sanatana Goswami<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu entrusted Sanatana Goswami with several important responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He instructed him to write books on devotional service, establish proper Vaishnava practices and rediscover the lost holy places connected with Lord Krishna\u2019s pastimes in Vrindavan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with Rupa Goswami, Sanatana Goswami was sent to Vrindavan to spread the teachings of bhakti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chaitanya-charitamrita describes Rupa and Sanatana as two commanders entrusted with spreading devotional service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their renunciation therefore did not mean withdrawing from responsibility. They gave up prestigious government positions to accept an even greater responsibility: carrying forward the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rediscovering the Holy Places of Vrindavan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Sanatana Goswami came to Vrindavan, many places associated with Lord Krishna\u2019s pastimes had become forgotten or difficult to identify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the instructions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sanatana Goswami worked to rediscover these sacred places and restore the spiritual importance of Vrindavan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Goswamis themselves lived extremely simple lives. They did not seek comfortable residences or material possessions. Instead, they dedicated their time to studying and writing scriptures, establishing Deity worship, discovering holy places and teaching Krishna consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through their service, Vrindavan became firmly established as one of the great centres of Krishna devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami and Lord Madana-mohana<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami is especially associated with Lord Madana-mohana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srila Prabhupada describes Sanatana Goswami as the ideal spiritual master because he gives the devotee shelter at the lotus feet of Madana-mohana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One beautiful account narrated by Srila Prabhupada reveals the simplicity of Sanatana Goswami\u2019s life and the intimate nature of his relationship with the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami lived beneath a tree and worshipped Madana-mohana with whatever little he had. He would offer simple dry bread without even salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madana-mohana once complained to Sanatana about receiving dry bread without salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana replied that he could offer only whatever he received and could not go about asking people for salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind this apparently simple exchange was an extraordinary relationship. Sanatana possessed practically nothing materially, yet he enjoyed an intimate loving relationship with the Supreme Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madana-mohana Temple<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Later, a wealthy merchant approached Sanatana Goswami and offered his service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana did not ask him to improve his own living conditions. Instead, he directed the merchant\u2019s resources toward the service of Lord Madana-mohana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, the celebrated Madana-mohana temple was established in Vrindavan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srila Prabhupada used this incident to explain the proper use of wealth in Krishna\u2019s service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami personally required almost nothing, but when resources became available, he wanted them to be used for Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His example demonstrates an important principle of devotional life: a devotee may live simply himself while using available resources wonderfully in the service of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teacher of the Science of Devotional Service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami was not only a great renounced devotee. He was also an extraordinary scholar and one of the most important teachers of Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among his important literary contributions are Brihad-bhagavatamrita, Hari-bhakti-vilasa and his commentary on the Tenth Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srila Prabhupada describes Brihad-bhagavatamrita as an important work for anyone who wants to understand devotees, devotional service and Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hari-bhakti-vilasa presents directions concerning Vaishnava practices and conduct. It was written in accordance with the instructions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through these works, Sanatana Goswami helped systematically establish the philosophical conclusions and practical principles of devotional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His writings were therefore not simply works of scholarship. They were part of the mission entrusted to him by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Acharya Known for Extraordinary Humility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite his scholarship, accomplishments and spiritual position, Sanatana Goswami remained remarkably humble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srila Prabhupada particularly identifies humility and meekness as exceptional characteristics of Sanatana Goswami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This humility was visible throughout his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had once held an influential government position, yet willingly accepted the life of a mendicant. He travelled under difficult conditions, lived with very few possessions and dedicated his intelligence and scholarship entirely to carrying out the instructions of Lord Chaitanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His life demonstrated that genuine spiritual greatness does not depend on receiving honour or recognition. The greater his service became, the more humble his mood remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Chaitanya Protects Sanatana Goswami<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another important incident occurred when Sanatana Goswami went to Jagannatha Puri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his travels, Sanatana developed a severe skin condition. Considering his body unfit and fearing that he might cause inconvenience, he decided to give up his life beneath the wheel of Lord Jagannatha\u2019s chariot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu understood his intention and stopped him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Chaitanya made Sanatana understand that because he had surrendered himself to the Lord, his body was no longer his independent property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lord had important services to accomplish through him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami was to establish the principles of devotional service, write books, rediscover the holy places of Vrindavan and perform many other important services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His body was therefore an instrument for carrying out the Lord\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This incident reveals a profound aspect of surrender. Surrender to Krishna means not only offering one\u2019s possessions but using one\u2019s very life according to the desire of the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Ocean of Mercy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami\u2019s renunciation and scholarship were accompanied by deep compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raghunatha Dasa Goswami remembered Sanatana Goswami as an \u201cocean of mercy\u201d and as one who felt distress upon seeing the suffering of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This description helps us understand the heart behind Sanatana Goswami\u2019s service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His scholarship was meant to guide others. His books were meant to preserve the path of devotional service. His work in Vrindavan was meant to help generations of devotees approach Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His renunciation was therefore not an attempt to escape responsibility. By reducing his personal needs, he was able to dedicate himself more completely to serving Krishna and helping others advance in devotional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lasting Legacy of Sanatana Goswami<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami\u2019s contribution continues to guide followers of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu centuries later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through his writings, he helped establish the philosophical conclusions and practices of devotional service. Through his work in Vrindavan, he helped reveal the holy places associated with Krishna\u2019s pastimes. Through his worship of Madana-mohana, he demonstrated the intimate relationship between the Lord and His devotee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, through his own life, he demonstrated what it means to make the instruction of the spiritual master one\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A powerful minister became a humble servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great scholar dedicated his knowledge to spreading devotional service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man who personally possessed almost nothing helped establish magnificent service for Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a devotee who sought little for himself left behind an extraordinary spiritual inheritance for generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Goswami\u2019s life teaches us that genuine surrender does not mean becoming inactive. It means using one\u2019s intelligence, abilities, resources, time and ultimately one\u2019s entire life in the service of Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the sacred occasion of remembering Sri Sanatana Goswami, we can pray for his mercy and seek inspiration from his extraordinary example of humility, surrender and unwavering dedication to the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Srila Sanatana Goswami was born in the year 1488 A.D. He lived for 70 years. His disappearance was on the full moon day of Asar in the year 1558. His name in Braja-lila is Rati-manjari. He was the elder brother of Sri Rupa Goswami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Badsha Hussain Shah, having heard of their profound scholarship wanted to engage the two brothers as his ministers. They came to live at Ramakeli, the capital of Gaura-desha and were presented much wealth by the Badsha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These brothers were from childhood greatly devoted to the Lord. Once Mahaprabhu decided to come to Bengal to have darshana of His mother. After spending a few days with Advaita Acharya in Santipura, He came to Ramakeli. Sakara Mallik (Sanatana) and Dabir Khas (Rupa), along with their brother Sri Ballabha (Anupama), who had a son who was just a small child (Sri Jiva), offered salutations at the lotus feet of Mahaprabhu. After Mahaprabhu had left Ramakeli to return to Puri, the brothers began to observe some vows and rituals in order to obtain shelter at His lotus feet. Sri Rupa and Anupama loaded a boat with their accumulated wealth and left Ramakeli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Sanatana neglected his duties as a minister, and the Badsha had Sanatana imprisoned. Sanatana received a letter from Sri Rupa, stating that he had deposited eight hundred gold coins with one grocer. With the help of this money, Sanatana should immediately arrange his release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanatana Gosvami lived for some time at Mahabon, the birth place of Sri Krishna. It is described in the Prema-vilas that the Madana Mohana Deity resided at the home of a Mathura brahmana, Damodar Chaube. One night Sanatana Gosvami and Damodar Chaube\u2019s wife both had a dream in which Madana Gopala requested to be able to come and live with Sanatana Gosvami. Sanatana received Madana Gopala from the family and took Him to a hillock, where he constructed a small hut and began to serve Madana Gopala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a few days a merchant named Sri Krishna dasa Kapoor came to Mathura to engage in business. His boat got stuck on a sand bar in the Yamuna and he could not free it. He met Sanatana and offered his dandavats and appealed to him to free it. Sanatana Goswami asked him to pray to Madana Gopala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna das offered his dandavats to Madana Mohanji and spoke to Him, \u201cIf, by Your mercy my boat is freed, then whatever profit is realized from the sale of its cargo, I will give to this Gosvami to be engaged in Your service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That afternoon there was such a downpour of rain that the boat very easily floated off the sand bar. His goods were sold at a handsome profit and with this money he made all arrangements for the execution of Sri Madana Gopal\u2019s worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Sanatana Gosvami compiled many scriptures. These include: Sri Brihat-bhagavatmrita, Sri Hari-bhakti-vilas and its Dig-darsani-tika, Sri Krishna-lilastava (dasam charit), Sri Bhagavata-tipani, (commentary on Srimad Bhagavatam) and Brihat-vaishnava-tosani.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
