Similarly, the omnipotent Lord is situated in His eternal abode, Goloka V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana; but He expands Himself both in the material and spiritual worlds, by His various potencies.&nbsp; par\u0101sya \u015baktir vividhaiva \u015br\u016byate (\u015avet\u0101\u015bvatara Upani\u1e63ad 6.8) His energies are innumerable and immeasurable. But primarily all these potencies can be grouped into three principal divisions:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The internal potency or spiritual potency \u2013 (cit \u015bakti)<\/li>\n<li>The marginal potency (ta\u1e6dasth\u0101) \u2013 (jiva \u015bakti \/ k\u1e63etraj\u00f1a)<\/li>\n<li>The external potency or illusory energy \u2013 (m\u0101y\u0101 \u015bakti)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These three potencies are described in Vi\u1e63\u1e47u Pur\u0101\u1e47a (6.7.61)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">vi\u1e63\u1e47u-\u015bakti\u1e25 par\u0101 prokt\u0101 k\u1e63etra-j\u00f1\u0101khy\u0101 tath\u0101 par\u0101<br \/>\navidy\u0101-karma-sa\u1e41j\u00f1\u0101ny\u0101 t\u1e5bt\u012by\u0101 \u015baktir i\u1e63yate<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The original potency of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u is superior. The living entity (k\u1e63etraj\u00f1a) actually belongs to that superior energy. The third energy, called the material energy, makes the living entity act in ignorance and engages him in fruitive activities.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Comparison of Spiritual Potency and the Illusory Energy of the Lord<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the master of all these potencies. The activities of internal and external potencies are almost similar, but there is a difference in both quality and quantity. The spiritual worlds, manifested by the internal potency, constitute three-fourths of the entire creation; whereas the material worlds, manifested by the external potency constitute the remaining one-fourth. This is the quantitative difference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-304\" title=\"creation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/creation.jpg\" alt=\"creation\" width=\"840\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/creation.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/creation-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Qualitatively, the creation of the cit potency is non-destructible and eternal; but the creation of m\u0101y\u0101 potency is destructible and temporary. This is confirmed in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/bhagavad-gita-as-it-is.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;(8.20)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">paras tasm\u0101t tu bh\u0101vo &#8216;nyo &#8216;vyakto &#8216;vyakt\u0101t san\u0101tana\u1e25<br \/>\nya\u1e25 sa sarve\u1e63u bh\u016bte\u1e63u na\u015byatsu na vina\u015byati<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The spiritual potency or the superior nature of the Lord is eternal (san\u0101tana) and is never annihilated (na vina\u015byati). When everything in this world (which is the creation of the inferior nature or m\u0101y\u0101 \u015bakti) is annihilated, that part remains as it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second qualitative difference is that the spiritual creation is real, whereas the material creation is illusory. The former is light and the latter is darkness. In darkness one cannot find what he wants. Similarly, in the darkness of material world one can never find what he searches for.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The spiritual creation is described as sat-cit-\u0101nanda (eternal, full of knowledge and bliss) and the material world is asat-acit-nir\u0101nanda (temporary, full of ignorance and full of miseries). Thus the search for eternal existence and permanent happiness cannot be satisfied in the material world characterized by the darkness of ignorance.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Nature of the Living Entity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-305\" title=\"Soul\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soul.jpg\" alt=\"Soul\" width=\"840\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soul.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soul-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The living entities (j\u012bva \u015bakti) are&nbsp; also superior energy and this is confirmed by K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101 (7.5)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">apareyam itas tv any\u0101\u1e41 prak\u1e5bti\u1e41 viddhi me par\u0101m<br \/>\nj\u012bva-bh\u016bt\u0101\u1e41 mah\u0101-b\u0101ho yayeda\u1e41 dh\u0101ryate jagat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a says that there is another superior energy which comprises the living entities who are trying to exploit the resources of this inferior, material nature. The living entities are superior because qualitatively they are one with the spiritual potency. The characteristics of the living entities are elaborately explained in the second chapter of Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101. It is stated that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">na j\u0101yate mriyate v\u0101 kad\u0101cin<br \/>\nn\u0101ya\u1e41 bh\u016btv\u0101 bhavit\u0101 v\u0101 na bh\u016bya\u1e25<br \/>\najo nitya\u1e25 \u015b\u0101\u015bvato &#8216;ya\u1e41 pur\u0101\u1e47o<br \/>\nna hanyate hanyam\u0101ne \u015bar\u012bre<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The soul (spirit of living entity) is never born; and it never dies. It is unborn (aja\u1e25), eternal (nitya\u1e25), ever-existing (\u015b\u0101\u015bvata\u1e25) and primeval (pur\u0101\u1e47a\u1e25). It is not annihilated even after the destruction of the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further it is stated that the soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. He is everlasting (nitya\u1e25), present everywhere (sarva-gata\u1e25), unchangeable (sth\u0101\u1e47u\u1e25; does not undergo any changes), immovable (acala\u1e25) and eternally the same (san\u0101tana\u1e25).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The living entity is called the marginal potency of the Supreme Lord (ta\u1e6dastha \u015bakti) because he can either be in the spiritual world created by the internal potency or in the material world created by the illusory energy. The relationship of the living entity with the Supreme Lord and His internal potency is eternal and permanent; but due to the forgetfulness of his real nature, he comes under the influence of the m\u0101y\u0101 \u015bakti.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Nature of Material Existence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307\" title=\"3 Modes of Material\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/3-modes-of-material1.jpg\" alt=\"3 Modes of Material\" width=\"840\" height=\"978\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/3-modes-of-material1.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/3-modes-of-material1-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the cause of this material existence? Why does the living entity forget his eternal relationship with the Lord? Why does he come under the influence of the inferior energy? The reason is explained in Prema-vivarta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>k<\/em><em>\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47<\/em><em>a-bahirmukha ha<\/em><em>\u00f1<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em> bhoga-v<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>\u00f1<\/em><em>ch<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em> kare<br \/>\nnika<\/em><em>\u1e6d<\/em><em>a-stha m<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>y<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em> t<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>re j<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>pa<\/em><em>\u1e6d<\/em><em>iy<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em> dhare<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word bahirmukha refers to a person who is hankering after material enjoyment. When he wants to enjoy independent of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, he comes under the influence of the external energy and identifies himself as one of the creations of material nature. As a consequence, he suffers the three-fold miseries in this material world. The three-fold miseries are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>adhy\u0101tmika (miseries inflicted by one\u2019s own body and mind),<\/li>\n<li>adhibhautika (miseries due to other living entities) and<\/li>\n<li>adhidaivika (miseries due to natural disturbances like earth quake, famines, wars, pestilence, etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The material nature is also described as gu\u1e47a-may\u012b: it consists of three modes: goodness, passion and ignorance. When the eternal living entity comes in touch with the material nature, he becomes conditioned by these three modes and thus they are bound. The word gu\u1e47a also means rope. The conditioned souls are bound by the strong ropes of goodness, passion and ignorance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The living entities are hankering after eternal happiness and indestructible existence. But the nature of material world is otherwise: du\u1e25kh\u0101layam a\u015b\u0101\u015bvatam (Bg 8.15) \u2013 the material world is full of miseries and is temporary. The so-called happiness and the so-called distress are all temporary. The desire of the living entity for permanent happiness and eternal existence always remains unfulfilled in the material nature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The desire for permanent happiness cannot be satisfied because in the material world there is no real happiness. A temporary cessation of the miseries is considered as happiness. Even the illusory happiness one enjoys in this material world is not permanent. But due to ignorance (avidy\u0101) the living entity cannot realize this and thus he engages in various fruitive activities (karma) which binds him more and more in the material world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The desire for eternal existence also cannot be satisfied in this material world because the eternal living entity identifies himself with the perishable material body and thus his existence is threatened due to the temporary nature of the material world, keeping him always in a state of fear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u015ar\u012bmad-Bh\u0101gavatam (11.2.37) explains this as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>bhaya<\/em><em>\u1e41<\/em><em> dvit<\/em><em>\u012b<\/em><em>y<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>bhinive<\/em><em>\u015b<\/em><em>ata<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em> sy<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>d <\/em><em>\u012b\u015b\u0101<\/em><em>d apetasya viparyayo &#8216;sm<\/em><em>\u1e5b<\/em><em>ti<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The root cause of fear in this material world is the misidentification with the material body. Due to absorption in the external, illusory energy of the Lord, the living entity forgets his own constitutional position and his relationship with the Supreme Lord. Thus, he gets bewildered by m\u0101y\u0101.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Reviving the Eternal Relationship with the Supreme Lord<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-308\" title=\"Srila Prabhupada\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Srila-Prabhupada.jpg\" alt=\"Srila Prabhupada\" width=\"840\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Srila-Prabhupada.jpg 840w, https:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Srila-Prabhupada-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The solution is prescribed in the Vedic scriptures:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>asato m<\/em>\u0101<em> sad gamaya tamaso m<\/em>\u0101<em> jyotir gamaya<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do not remain in the state of non-existence. Wake up to the reality. Do not remain in ignorance. Come to Light. This is the call of Vedas. The Vedas and Pur\u0101\u1e47as are meant for leading the forgetful living entity from the darkness of material world to the transcendental spiritual world by reminding him of his eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord. The process of reviving this relationship is to engage in devotional service of the Lord as prescribed in the scriptures under the guidance of a&nbsp;bonafide spiritual master.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The spiritual master is offered prayers with the following verse:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>o<\/em><em>\u1e41<\/em><em> aj<\/em><em>\u00f1<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>na-timir<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>ndhasya j\u00f1<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>n<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>\u00f1<\/em><em>jana-<\/em><em>\u015b<\/em><em>al<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>kay<\/em><em>\u0101<br \/>\n<\/em><em>cak<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>ur unm<\/em><em>\u012b<\/em><em>lita<\/em><em>\u1e41<\/em><em> yena tasmai <\/em><em>\u015b<\/em><em>r<\/em><em>\u012b<\/em><em>-gurave nama<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was born in the darkest ignorance, and my spiritual master opened my eyes with the torch of knowledge. I offer my respectful obeisances unto him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only a bonafide spiritual master can open our eyes with the torch of knowledge and lead us to light from the darkness of ignorance. Irrespective of caste, creed and color, anyone&nbsp;can engage in the transcendental service of the Lord and thus attain spiritual perfection. The simple process recommended for this age of Kali is to chant the holy names of the Lord. The Supreme Lord appeared as&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iskconbangalore.org\/festivals\/lord-chaitanya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u015ar\u012b Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;to inaugurate the transcendental sankirtana movement to encourage everyone to participate in the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord. He prescribed chanting of the specific names:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>hare k<\/em><em>\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47<\/em><em>a hare k<\/em><em>\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47<\/em><em>a k<\/em><em>\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47<\/em><em>a k<\/em><em>\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47<\/em><em>a hare hare<br \/>\nhare r<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>ma hare r<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>ma r<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>ma r<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>ma hare hare<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/srilaprabhupada.co.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u015ar\u012bla Prabhup\u0101da<\/a><\/span>, the Founder-Ac\u0101rya of the International Society for K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a Consciousness, propagated this movement all over the world.
