Food Festival for a noble cause at ISKCON
TASTES of India , a two-day celebration of Indian cuisine showcasing sumptuous delights from across the country , was held at the ISKCON temple on Dec 31, 2005 and Jan 1. Over 3,500 people attended the culinary celebration as they welcomed the New Y ear with a gastronomical treat and special darshans at the ISKCON temple.
This year, the festival was conceptualised around the theme India , which saw an extensive buffet traversing the major r ivers of India to present a mouth water nighter Indian cuisines.
T raditional chefs from various regions of India prepared a gala buffet that featured cuisines from various states that the rivers pass through. Visitors got an opportunity to feast on cuisines from Sutlej basin and savoured the delectable food from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and enjoyed the palatable treats from W est Bengal and Bihar which represented the Ganga basin.
With over 65 dishes on offer , the food festival attempted to showcase the wealth of Indian vegetarian food and dispel the common myth that food cooked without onions and garlic is tasteless.
According to the chief program coordinator of T astes of India food festival, Chitranga Chaitanya Das, "Food is an important part of Indian culture and it was our endeavour to showcase the wide variety of vegetarian cuisine prevalent in various parts of the country ." "This is our attempt to try and bring back Indian culinary traditions since they have been sidelined due to increased western influences," he added.
All proceeds from the event, an annual fundraiser , goes towards ISKCON’s acclaimed mid-day meal programme ’Akshaya Patra’ for school children. The Akshaya Patra Foundation feeds over 3,00,000 underprivileged children in eight locations in India
