Sri Krishna Janmashtami is the celebration of the appearance day of Lord Krishna on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of Bhadra.

Lord Krishna is the original person (adi purusha), Supreme Personality of Godhead from whom all other incarnations expand. He appeared as the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva.  He was born as a baby with four hands, holding conch shell, club, disc, and lotus flower, decorated with the mark of Shrivatsa, wearing the jeweled necklace of the Kaustubha stone, dressed in yellow silk, appearing dazzling like a bright blackish cloud, wearing a helmet bedecked with the Vaidurya stone, valuable bracelets, earrings and similar other ornaments all over His body and an abundance of hair on His head.

At ISKCON Bangalore, the Deities are dressed most grandly with new dresses and jewellery.  The temple is so grandly decorated that it heralds the most celebrated event in the whole universe.  Huge crowds throng the temple for darshana till midnight.  The devotees fast till midnight, all the while engaging in various services.

One of the sevas which can be rendered only on this day every year is known as Thottilu seva.  The seva kartas get to swing an enchanting Deity of baby Krishna eating butter.  This Deity is also known popularly as ‘Makhan Krishna’ or ‘Benne Krishna’.

Another seva that is performed throughout the day is abhisheka seva.  The last abhisheka takes place around 10 pm and is the grandest.  The abhisheka culminates in the most auspicious arati ceremony of the Lord.
